A poetic moment at the Soulages museum in Rodez

It is in Rodez, a lovely town in Southern France, that the Soulages museum has created an exhibition about time. Works of fifty artists are displayed, some of them famous and others to be discovered.

Pierre Soulages, the famous ninety-seven year old artist is well known for his enormous canvases, all covered with a thick black paint in which appear multiple facets and reflections he named “noir lumière” and “outre noir”. This world-renowned artist, a leading figure of abstract art, was born in Rodez, a picturesque town in the Southwest of France. In March 2014, a museum bearing his name was unveiled with a permanent exhibition of the most important collection of his artwork, donated by him and his wife, demonstrating the diversity and the complexity of his paintings. Another section of the museum is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, according to his wish to promote young artists: “I never liked monographic museums. But this one will not be a museum like the others. Emphasis will be placed on creation, on how the works are born, and it will be mainly open to other artists and contemporary creation”.

François Poivret

On exhibit until April 30, 2017, the temporary show “Tant de temps”, will feature fifty works from fifty artists showcasing their vision of the concept of time. Some of the artists are internationally known and others are the predicted talents of tomorrow. They come together around a universal subject where currently the tradition is for everything to go faster and faster. Of prominence is a piece from Christian Boltanski, the famous artisan of memory and visual artist of time, as is a display from the multi-faceted painter Gerhard Richter.  Of special note is a delight from the plastic artist Bill Viola who keeps us intrigued with a display of the similarities and complications between fire and water. The concept of time can be very poetic and sensitive when considering the passing of time from an individual and personal point of view, as everyone can directly identify with it, and these artists capture their views perfectly.

A wide range of propositions and questionings are showcased in this exhibition, making sure that visitors, art lovers and philosophers, will be fully immersed in the vision offered by the Soulages’ museum. A poetic journey through time that is not to be missed !
